Islamabad: Targeting around 23.8 million children under the age of five years, a nationwide polio campaign will begin today (Monday). The campaign, which is the last among the Sub-National Immunisation Days in 2017-18, will be carried out in 109 settled districts and tribal agencies of the country.During the five-day campaign, around 23.8 million children will be vaccinated against polio. Among them are 7.8 million in Punjab, 8.17 million in Sindh, 4.46 million in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 1.98 million in Balochistan, 1.04 million in Federally Administered Tribal Areas and 0.33 million in Islamabad.A total of 161,000 health workers will participate in the activity. They include 16,673 area in charge, 4,561 medical officers, and 122,432 members of mobile vaccination teams, 5,728 of fixed and 8,044 of transit teams.The relevant officials claim that the law-enforcement and security agencies will fully support vaccinators in meeting in their targets. The country is close to eradicating polio with just one case of the disease being reported this year.
