Weekly SPI lowers 0.19pc

KARACHI: Sensitive price indicator (SPI) for the week ended February 2 inched down 0.19 percent over the previous week, but it rose 1.69 percent as compared to weekly inflation in the corresponding period a year earlier, official data showed on Friday.

Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) data showed that weekly inflation for the combined income group showed a downward trend.

SPI for income group of up to Rs8,000 was marginally down 0.40 percent during the week under review as compared to the preceding week.

Weekly inflation for the group earning Rs8,001 to Rs12,000 declined by 0.35 percent, followed by 0.31 percent for the people earning between Rs12,001 and Rs18,000, 0.24 percent for those making Rs18,001 and Rs35,000 and 0.03 percent for the income group earning above Rs35,000.

PBS computes weekly price trend of 53 essential items from 17 urban centres. Average prices of 16 goods decreased during the week ended on February 2 over the previous week.

Prices of potatoes fell 8.35 percent on a kilogram, showing the highest decline, followed by onions down 7.46 percent, tomatoes down 6.62 percent, farm or broiler live chicken down 3.31 percent, soap (LifeBuoy) down 2.31 percent, and garlic down 1.27 percent, according to the PBS data.

Items that registered less than one percent decline were average quality gur down 0.92 percent, washed masoor down 0.77 percent, washed gram 0.75 percent, LPG cylinder (11kg) down 0.70 percent, washed white lintel down 0.59 percent, refined sugar down 0.29 percent, red chilli powder (loose) down 0.23 percent, wheat down 0.11 percent, unpacked vegetable ghee down 0.04 percent, and wheat flour bag down 0.01 percent, as per the data.

Average prices of 13 items registered increase during the week under review, as compared to the preceding week. Prices of petroleum went up the most with high-speed diesel up 6.65 percent, kerosene oil up 5.71 percent, and petrol super up 3.66 percent. Other commodities that registered increase in prices include bananas up 3.14 percent, farm hen eggs up 2.02 percent, and washed moong up 1.0 percent, according to the PBS data.
