In his first State of the Union address to Congress and the nation, Trump said “rivals like China and Russia” were challenging “our interests, our economy and our values”.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying on Wednesday said that “common interests between the two countries are much bigger than the differences”, urging the US to abandon the outdated mentality.
"We hope the US side can abandon the outdated Cold War mentality to work for the shared goal with China of properly managing our differences and upholding the steady development of China-US relations," Chunying said at a regular press briefing.
Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang also said the common interests of Washington and Beijing "far outweigh our differences and disagreements".
He said a steady relationship with the US was "also in the interest of the whole world.”
"China hopes that the United States will work with us and continue to view this relationship in a positive overall perspective," he said after meeting with British Prime Minister Theresa May on Wednesday.
US officials have recently paved the way for a strategic pivot that envisions a world of renewed great power competition with the likes of Russia and China.
